Froglets and Fieldwork

We have had amazing summer term at Perivale Wood. The Education Programme has been fully booked and we’ve enjoyed visits from many different schools and groups.

Perivale Primary Year 1 came for a full day and learned about vertebrates, wild flowers and trees. It was the perfect time for the vertebrate session as the tadpoles were in different stages of metamorphosis and the slow worms were active and easy to find.

St John Fisher brought Year 5 to learn about animal life cycles. Again we were able to look at the different life cycle stages of a frog as well as finding lots of insects in the meadow with sweep nets and pooters and the children also had a go at making their own nests and learning about the life cycle of a bluetit.

We welcomed back Selborne Primary nursery and reception classes for some bug hunting fun and bug art activities.

Grove Park Primary School brought their Year 4 class who collected vital scientific data for the OPAL bug survey (https://www.opalexplorenature.org/bugscount).

We had our first A level group from Dormers Wells High School, who carried out some fieldwork on the biodiversity of the meadows at the reserve for their core practical assessment. They came for two days and mastered different fieldwork techniques before carrying out their own investigations.

We also welcomed four Year 2 classes from Christ the Saviour Primary School who learned about the woodland habitat and the plants and animals that live there and 25th Ealing Beavers who completed their Gruffalo Explorer Badge by creating dens for cuddly woodland animals.

Finally, we’ve been busy with Springhallow School helping them to develop their outdoor classroom at their school and inspiring them with Forest School sessions at Perivale Wood.

We are already getting some bookings for the Autumn term, so if you would like to bring your school or group to Perivale Wood please fill in the booking form on the website. We are looking forward to developing the education programme further over the next few months and will have some exciting announcements to make soon!

  1. Hi team Perivale Wood!

I just wanted to say the Beavers of 25th Ealing had a fab time with Nicola yesterday! They were so inspired and made fabulous dens in the woods as part of their Outdoors Challenge Badge.

The sessions are great – very well thought out and hopefully we will be back soon! Thank you so much.
